The Friends of Golf supports student athlete golfers by instilling the values of honesty, ethics, and fellowship with a true appreciation for the game. Regardless of their economic standing, FOG helps them compete and develop. It’s one of the ways our founder, Phil Frengs, gives back to the community.
Each fall, FOG honors someone with the Ken Venturi Spirit of Giving Award, recognizing an individual who has done more than their share to make the game more affordable, more accessible and more attractive to boys and girls throughout the country — young athletes who want to excel but may not have the necessary economic resources to do so.
Past recipients of the award include Al Michaels, Vin Scully, Jim Nantz, Peter Ueberroth, Greg Penske and Coach John Wooden, among others. This year, the award went to Phil, whose charitable activities include far more than golf.
Here’s a video of the award presentation, focusing (of course) not on the golf-related part of his acceptance speech but on the Racing to End Alzheimer’s segment. He’s saluted by CBS Sports legend Jim Nantz and introduced by the voice of the UCLA Bruins, Chuck White.
It’s exciting to have Phil’s generosity and commitment to the cause recognized this way. We hope you agree and enjoy what he has to say here.
